Using the method I did last week for my HST I once again increased the size of the blocks from the given measurements to give myself room for error, and round up my squares to the nearest full inch.

General Supply Info:

  • I use  wool pressing mat, cordless iron and fabric starch
  • Schmetz universal chrome needles or quilting piecing needles 75/11
  • Aurifil 40 wt Mako Cotton thread, is what I sew with, I typically always use white thread.
  • Clover Clips
  • Sewing Pins
  • Design Wall or extra piece of batting

Measurements for the pieces needed to construct this block will not be provided in this tutorial. It is a prerequisite of making this block that you have a copy of the pattern, Long Time Gone. Measurements, where applicable, can be found in this book I will note any mistakes in the booklet however that I ran into when cutting my fabric choices.

Cut all the Pieces

Cut all pieces as per cutting instructions in the booklet for block 2 of the three HST.

Following cutting your pieces, I increased the size of the sqaures I cut to 3 inchs and than trimed them down to be the correct size, this helped me should be seam allowences be slightly off. A 2.5 by 2.5 ruler can be helpful with this block.

Because I'll be using different fabrics in each of the three HST blocks

I cut my fabrics slightly different than directions state:

Cut 12 patterned squares

Cut 12 natural or background colored squares

For this block I want to use fabrics by Jen herself as this HST block 2 has a nice large feature square.

Jen has great diagrams within the book for piecing each unit.

My blocks are not 100% perfect and for me that is okay, remember within what limits you are okay with within your quilt project.
